ABOUT US

The First Baptist Church was founded in 1934 by Pastor Earl Miller.  He attended Bible college and returned to Berlin.  While conducting evangelistic crusades, interested Christians asked him to start a church.  After establishing regular prayer meetings, the church was organized, and a small structure was built where the church services could be conducted.  This was the foundation of the First Baptist Church of Berlin.  The church has stood for 75 years in faithful service to the Lord.  First Baptist has endured some ups and downs and tough times, but God has stood by her to establish her in righteousness.  By His grace, we are still faithfully serving the Lord.

In January of 2005, the members of First Baptist church voted to call our present pastor.  Pastor Tom Nye has served faithfully, guiding our ministry through the Bible so that it has become a strong, fundamental and uncompromising church after the historic Baptist Faith.  He has instructed our church concerning the doctrines and beliefs of our Baptist forefathers and informed us of our ancient Baptist heritage.  A more detailed  look at what we believe can be found on the "OUR BELIEFS" page of this site.  You may access more ancient and historical information about our beliefs by reading  "The Philadelphia Confession of Faith"  through this link.  This ancient Confession of Faith is an accurate assessment of Scriptural truth and provides a historic foundation for our beliefs.  Our faith not only reaches back to the time of the Reformation (16th Century), but even as far back as the First Century in the sense that our doctrines and practices have been derived from the Bible.

The Baptists as a denomination officially formed in England in the mid-1600s after the Reformation had made a major impact on the Christian world. There were two types of Baptists at that time, General Baptists and Particular Baptists.  We hold to the Particular Baptist Heritage, which embraces important aspects of Biblical doctrine. These may be succinctly stated in our belief in the absolute sovereignty of God and the special and particular relationship which God has with His elect. Though God had chosen them before the foundation of the world, His elect are identified by their personal faith in Christ.  How comforting to know that God had definite plans to secure His elect even before He created them! (Rom. 8:28-39; Ephesians 1:3-5,11; II Thess. 2:13; I Peter 1:1-2).

We hope that this general survey has been helpful, and that those who appreciate the strong Biblical and historical foundation upon which we stand, will be moved to worship with us.  As many people are running to and fro seeking to find something of substance, we are securely resting in the historic Christian Faith.  In our day of compromise and innovation, there is great security and assurance in the Bible and in a church which has been built upon its unalterable and eternal truths.
